Like, damn. There’s a different model and variety for just about every preference. O__O

I don’t even know where to start on all that. Good thing we have a while to go before we have to have them. I do know I want one for each car. And I want this, too:

Brica Seat Guardian Car Seat Protector

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I have seen what car seat bottoms do to leather seats. That's a whole lot of NOPE.

My godchild still uses a car seat because he’s technically undersize or whatever... I’m in my 20s but it’s amazing how things have changed. I was laying in the back of my dad’s Caravan when I was five or so. I’ve rode around in a pickup bed or two (in retrospect: incredibly stupid).

I am 26 (will be 27 in November) and I think I had a car seat until about 2. After that, I rode up front. Of course, our car didn't have a passenger airbag, either!

Just find one that fits in your car. Half of them are designed like they’re to be the only usable seat in the vehicle unless you have a minivan or giant SUV.

My mom’s ‘91 Corsica was considered pretty advanced since it was the first model year of the L-Body with a driver’s airbag.

Here is a cheaper seat cover that I’ve used. These are awesome. Summer Infant Elite DuoMat for Car Seat, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00368CLXW/…

As for car seats, get the kind that snaps into a base. You strap the base in your car and then the seat snaps in and out of the base. They are awesome especially if you've got multiple vehicles that the seat will be going in. The bases are cheap enough that it's worth it to out one in each car.

Yeah I'm not interested in the monstrosities that take up the entire car. My coworker drives an Altima and the car seat for her kid renders the entire back of the car unusable.

Recarros, man. If they can handle a racecar crash, they can handle my kids. There expensive, but when you actual handle then they seem so much beefier than any other brands. God forbid something ever happens, those recarros will be the last things left intact.

Initially you will want a travel system, meaning a rear facing car seat that attaches to a base where the carriage can lift out and attach easily to a stroller. You do not want to be buckling and unbuckling a baby while traveling. They sleep a lot so the easier they are to transport the better. Look into Graco or Chicco systems. There are others but those are the most popular and reasonably priced. Pay a little more for a higher quality system that will last longer. Also make sure the car seat is compatible with your stroller before you buy it. Chicco and Graco make strollers as well, but the low end ones are a little chincy and hard to collapse. Some of the upper level brands have adapters for popular car seats.

If there is a Buy Buy Baby near you, that place is super helpful and has a ton of selection.

We bought one of these and the car seat adapter...it was a good investment. Super light, easy to push, quick collapse. The bassinet I didn’t travel with, but it was great around the house.

We have have a keyfit30s for munchkin number one. The base locks in the car using latch or belts and the carrier clicks in. When he was an infant we took it out and dropped the carrier part into a frame to make a stroller. We picked up a second one at a consignment sale for the base as it was cheaper than a new extra base just check the expiration date. We have a britax front facing to booster seat now that my folks got for credit card points.

Anything convertible tends to be larger.

tl;dr

Key fit3o infant seat

Britax or recaro for the front facing from me.

All of this fits in my jetta without making my front passenger hate themselves.

Thanks for the info, man! We have a Babies ‘R Us about 40 miles from us so I plan to take my 6 for a trek over there.

Babies R Us is ok...their selection has gotten better, but not quite as good as some other stores. But now is the time to start shopping for this before your wife gets all tired and uncomfortable. Really take the strollers and seats through their paces.

Also, the first time you go to Babies R Us after you know you are expecting is a real trip.

We’ve got a Graco Snugride 35, which is great. We’ve got bases in my truck, my wife’s car, and my mom’s car. The carrier also clicks into a stroller, so you can just take the kid out of the car and go straight into the stroller without unbuckling them. Super handy when they’re sleeping.

Also, my truck is only a supercab (half rear doors) and it fits in the back with room for my short wife to still ride in the front.

For an infant, consider a “basket” style seat that clicks into a base that you leave in the car. Then get a base for each car. We did this with our second child and wished we had with the first. Also if you can afford Britax, they are the best seats I’ve used in terms of how easy they are to latch in and properly adjust compared to other seats.
